“Michael” has made history yet again!
Lionsgate’s “Michael” biopic has officially made $1 billion at the box office.
According to Variety, the film has generated $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million internationally. As of the writing of this article, those numbers bring the movie’s total box office earnings to $1.001 billion.
Not only is “Michael” the largest film of all time for Lionsgate, but it also stands as the highest-grossing musical biopic ever made, surpassing 2018 smash hit “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
‘Michael’ Sequel
However, Michael Jackson’s story isn’t over, as Lionsgate has confirmed work has begun on a sequel.
In an interview with Variety, Lionsgate Studios executive Adam Fogelson shared his excitement about telling more of Jackson’s story, stating,
“There are so many other events that happened, even in the time frame of the original movie that weren’t touched upon, so we’re very, very confident that we’ve got an incredibly entertaining movie that will appeal once again to a global audience.”
The first film wrapped with Jackson’s 1987 “BAD Tour.”
Legacy
According to IMDb, “Michael” tells the story of the “…early life of musician Michael Jackson, from the discovery of his talent as the lead of the Jackson Five to the artist whose creative ambition fueled a pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.”
The film marks the first role for newcomer Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael from his teen years up through adulthood.
In an interview with co-star Miles Teller, Jackson shared his desire for fans to learn more about his uncle through the film, stating,
“I’m most excited about people getting to understand Michael from a point of view they haven’t seen before, to feel the quiet moments…I feel like people will understand him a lot more.”
Since then, the film has earned a 97% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes and solidified its place in box office history.
